Hydro One

 

Hydro One has announced that Richard's Coffee House in Brockville is its 45,000 customer to take part in the Small Business Lighting program. Since launching in 2008, the Save on Energy program at Hydro One has helped 45,000 small business customers invest in energy efficient lighting and reduce their consumption by more than 1,037 GWh, which represents an estimated $176 million savings.

 

 

Philips

 

Philips Lighting has announced that it has been ranked as the leading Influencer in a new Leaderboard report on Internet of Things (IoT) lighting for the commercial building market from industry market research firm Navigant Research.

 

 

Alberta

 

Alberta’s Department of Municipal Affairs has issued a new Electrical Standata permitting wire-free switching in all new construction projects.

Last year, Electro-Federation Canada published a research study on low-voltage DC (LVDC) power and the implications and opportunities this technology will have on the electrical market. Recently, EFC learned that the Canadian government has a vested interest in promoting LVDC power to remote communities, the new Canadian Electrical Code is in effect and now includes updates for LVDC installation and use, and CSA is forming a new technical committee for LVDC.

An issue faced by many countries is the need for clean, efficient sources of energy to power their homes, schools, hospitals and businesses. With reliable energy sources comes an improved, more consistent quality of life.

 

 

NRC

 

Reducing reliance on diesel in rural and remote communities will decrease Canada's carbon footprint, support climate change adaptation, contribute to healthier communities and provide new opportunities for jobs and economic growth.

 

 

PEI

 

Teams from Nalcor and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro), along with Emera and Nova Scotia Power, have worked hard to successfully bring energy over Emera’s new Maritime Link transmission line to the island.

 

 

NWT

 

NTPC is pleased to report that the Variable Speed Generator (VSG) Project in Aklavik has reached a major milestone with successful commissioning of the test unit. Electricity is now being provided to the more than 300 NTPC customers in Aklavik using a converter-based VSG platform. The VSG will also integrate solar power from a new 55 kilowatt solar array, installed by the GNWT earlier this year.

 

 

Hydro Quebec

Hydro-Québec’s energy has once again been selected in the Massachusetts clean energy request for proposals process. In view of signing a contract for the supply of 9.45 TWh of clean energy, the members of the Massachusetts evaluation team will negotiate in parallel with the proponents of two transmission line projects, both being conducted in partnership with Hydro-Québec, and one transmission line project will be chosen.

CSA

Now in its 24th edition, the 2018 Canadian Electrical Code, Part I includes a number of significant updates and changes to better help electrical workers in the safe maintenance of electrical equipment and create safer electrical installations.

This edition features important revisions to many sections. For example, Section 26 now mandates the use of tamper-resistant receptacles in additional areas where children may be present. Section 62 now requires ground fault circuit interrupter protection for heating devices and controls in proximity to tubs, sinks, and shower stalls. Section 10 has been updated, reorganized, and significantly reduced in length.

 Sean Freeman

Sean Freeman is a vibrant, enthusiastic and selfless individual who has taken his trade expertise beyond that of a simple career. Not only is he a Master Electrician but he has traveled around the world as an electrical technician delegate with the Red Cross Emergency Response Unit. His skills are a vital part of emergency response and disaster relief.

In 2013 Sean responded to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. In 2014 Sean spent almost a month in Kenema, Sierra Leone working at the Ebola Treatment Centre. There he was responsible for ensuring electricity and clean water were available, and worked to strengthen the infrastructure of the facility.
