Nanogrid Integration; In Case you Missed it
This issue is my first as the editor of Electrical Industry News Week. Working closely with Line Goyette as well as Owen Hurst in the three years I’ve been here, I’ve learned a lot and can’t thank them enough for the opportunities they have given me. I look forward to continuing to work with and learn from them. Line and the EIN team have put a lot of work into making this publication successful and continuing that growth will be a challenge. But the growth and evolution of this industry will be opportunity for us to grow and evolve, as well. This issue continues to look back at some of our featured articles over the first half of the year. We also look at a new partnership that provides insight into how nanogrids work and the impact they can have on the energy transition. Our product focus this month is Tools & Equipment, which goes along with our recently released Digital Handbook featured in this issue. Good Reading!

Awesense and VadimUS Partner on Nanogrid Integration Platform
By Blake Marchand
Awesense and vadimUS recently announced a collaboration to address roadblocks faced by electric utilities in nanogrid integration, as well as power quality issues for commercial and industrial (C&I) facilities. The partnership couples the Awesense Digital Energy Platform with VadimUS’ VadiMAP turnkey solution. Essentially, to bridge the gap on renewable energy for utilities and C&I customers. Power quality is becoming more and more of an issue. Renewables and distributed energy resources (DERs) can be utilized to alleviate that stress on the centralized grid, although the infrastructure and systems need to be in place to facilitate the transition.

Breaking Down the Construction Language Barrier with A Common Data Standard
By Lauren Ginsberg
Construction is a high-stakes industry where effective communication is critical to achieving successful project outcomes. But what happens when teams are not speaking the same language or using the same naming conventions: chaos. Breaking down the language barrier in construction is critical and the difference between project success and failure. - Expectation vs. Reality: My First Year as an Electrical Apprentice
Being a female in the trade and a new apprentice, I had no idea what to expect on this jobsite. I knew I would be working at a school, with no idea what that entailed. It ended up being a completely new build, and I was grateful to see this job from start to finish. The guys I worked with that first day were great. They were helpful and made me feel comfortable right away. I didn't know what to expect, so I felt fortunate to have this support right off the bat.
- Surviving Long Term Sequelae of Electrical Shock Hazard Exposure
The electric shock hazard has been neglected. Journeyman Electricians have accepted been shocked as part of the job, a “right” of passage, a badge of honour. This has not been acceptable and Journeyman Electricians may not be aware of the long term sequela health effects of receiving multiple low voltage electrical shocks and how it may have impacted them. With respect to treatment there is only a single formal recognized treatment centre in Canada, the St Johns Rehab Centre. Electrical Injury Program.

- IBEW Members Shine at IDEAL National Championships
Like most major events over the last year, the COVID-19 pandemic put serious restrictions on the Ideal National Championships, which annually pits the top electricians from the United States, Canada, Australia, China, and Mexico against each other in skill competitions. Organizers dramatically scaled back this year’s event to comply with health guidelines. But that didn’t stop IBEW members from continuing to dominate.
- Discussing ECAO's New FLAC Program with Executive Director Graeme Aitken
ECAO recently launched a new program called Future Leaders Advisory Council (FLAC). Their inaugural meeting was held virtually this past June. Discussing the thought process behind FLAC, ECAO Executive Director Graeme Aitken explained there were a number of factors that went into the decision. The program is meant to be a resource for young professionals in the electrical industry for networking, building professional development skills, mentorship, and learning about the inner workings of the industry in general. It will also help invigorate ECAO by bringing new perspectives into their committee structure. But ultimately, Aitken said, FLAC’s direction will be decided by its members.
