This issue features three profile artciles with leaders in the industry, starting with Mark Klein. Mark discusses his progression to Co-President of Klein Tools and the impact he hopes to make on the broader industry. We also have an interview with Sarah Silverstein or Liteline in an article that originally appeared in Lighting Design & Specification. Sarah discusses the progression to her current role, her experience in the industry, as well as providing insight on broader trends. Additionally, we continue to see further investment in the skilled trades to encourage diversity, improve apprenticeship training, and ultimately bridge the gap between retirees and newcomers to the industry. Brockville Businesswoman Thrives in Electrical Contracting Industry

“I’ve been very fortunate,” says Gray, who became an owner of Industrial Electrical Contractors Brockville Limited in April 2018. The company is a member of the Electrical Contractors Association of Ontario (ECAO). Her company has been involved in many exciting projects, including the base building, substation and service entrance and BAS electrical installation of a new 3M plant for the production of N95 masks. They also do work beyond Brockville, including for the City Ottawa and the Chalk River Nuclear Plant.

Sarah Silverstein Discusses Her Career Progression and the Evolution of Liteline

Sarah Silverstein is a principal with Liteline along side her two brothers Mark and Daniel. Together, they lead the company founded by their father, Steve Silverstein, who retired in 2018. Although she initially pursued a career in outdoor education, Sarah was instrumental in the company’s expansion into architectural lighting and the U.S. market. She joined Liteline as a project manager in between stints working in outdoor education. Now she leads Liteline’s U.S. distribution arm and marketing department.

- Manitoba Invests in Skilled Trades Training for Indigenous Women
The Manitoba government is investing more than $600,000 to partner with the Manitoba Construction Sector Council (MCSC) to deliver a multi-faceted, skilled-trades training initiative for Indigenous women in four northern and remote communities, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Cathy Cox, minister responsible for status of women, Economic Development and Jobs Minister Jon Reyes, and Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations Minister Alan Lagimodiere announced today.

- Canada Announces Union and Non-Union Call for Proposals to Incentivize Apprenticeships in 39 Skilled Trades
The federal governemnt launched a Call for Proposals under the new Apprenticeship Service, to support employers, as they look to hire apprentices and provide on-the-job training towards a certification in the trades. Announced in Budget 2021, the Apprenticeship Service will provide $470 million over three years, beginning in 2021-22, to help 55,000 first-year apprentices in eligible Red Seal trades connect with opportunities at small and medium-sized employers (SMEs).
