Product Focus: Lighting Control
This month our product focus is lighting control, in line with that we look at Dave Hiemstra’s take on deploying budget friendly lighting control solutions. This issue also looks at some soft skills with an interesting article from Keith Sones on the importance of teamwork and taking initiative to address the issues that impact you, your team, and community. We also feature a smart city infrastructure case study from Trilliant and the City of Cowansville, Quebec. The federal government has announced a new grant program for residential energy saving projects, which may provide opportunity for contractors. Also make sure to look at Electro-Federation Canada’s recently launched online safety guide for electrical products. Good Reading!

Don’t Wait for a Prescription from Afar
By Keith Sones
The writing was on the wall. The closures would happen. But a lot of people were upset, and I was one of them. In the early 2000s, my family and I were living in a mainly rural (at least by city dweller standards) valley in south central British Columbia. The West Kootenay region is known for its diverse outdoor recreation activities and as a great place to raise a family. It has a proud industrial history, evidenced through the longstanding pulp mill, a massive lead zinc smelter a few miles away and several hydroelectric dams, all of it within spitting distance of the mighty Columbia River. Generations of families had worked at these institutions over the many decades, paying homage to both the companies that provided a pay cheque and the labour unions that fought to improve their lot in life. Tradition meant a lot. So it came as an unwelcome shock when the provincial government of the day announced the closure of several schools in the area.

Case Study
Trilliant Partners with the City of Cowansville to Pioneer Smart City Infrastructure
The City of Cowansville in south-central Quebec is the largest city in the Brome-Missisquoi region, with more than 15,000 residents. Despite being a smaller-sized city, it is known as an economic and industrial hub. It also has a strong focus on innovation and efficiency — as demonstrated by decisions such as the one it made in 2017 to use beet juice to help combat icy winter roads, allowing the City to reduce the amount of salt it was using, thereby saving money and decreasing the impact on the environment. Like many cities across North America, Cowansville is constantly looking for ways such as this to advance its use of new technologies, increase its sustainability efforts and help improve the lives of its citizens.

Designing & Deploying Budget Friendly, Code Compliant Lighting Controls
By Blake Marchand
Dave Hiemstra (CLCP, CTR) is the Controls Group Manager with Optics Lighting, he presented on Designing & Deploying Budget Friendly, Code Compliant Lighting Controls as part of the Alberta Electrical Alliance Electrical Learning Expo. “We have moved into a world of budget cuts – more than ever before we’re seeing value engineering on projects, we’re seeing budgets latched, everyone’s doing the bare minimum, at this point, on what needs to be done,” he explained at the top of his presentation, which ultimately puts the focus on being budget friendly when designing lighting control.
