Message From The Editor
Time to say goodbye
For eight years now at the helm of this newsletter I have seen the industry steadily progress. Technologies are developing and becoming smarter, the Canadian Electrical Code has been updated several times, and safety is still at the heart of best practices. Being an electrical contractor comes with new challenges in these almost post-pandemic days, including maintaining a supply of materials and products. I have enormous respect for all the men and women who move the industry forward by meeting and exceeding codes, standards and best practices. I leave the helm to my colleague Blake Marchand, with whom I have been working closely for almost three years. He shares my passion for our industry. A special thank you to Scott Williams, who has been with me since the beginning of this adventure, brought to life by our publisher, John Kerr, a visionary leader with deep roots in the electrical industry. Of course, you can continue following me and reading me in our sister publications Canadian Electrical Wholesaler and Lighting Design & Specification. Thank you for having joined us on our journey and contributing to the success of this publication. Good reading!

Codes & Standards
Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code Part I
By William (Bill) Burr
Section 36 – High Voltage Installations applies to installations operating above 750 volts which require special rules and conditions because high voltage arcs can travel through free air and along the surface of some materials. In addition non-current-carrying metal parts can carry dangerous voltages along their surfaces in a ground-fault situation without effective bonding to ground.

Avoiding Networked Lighting Control System Deployment Pitfalls
By Steve Mesh
My blog post from April 1, 2020 entitled Lessons "Learned from Living Lab" describes a research project about retrofitting existing spaces with networked lighting control systems (NLCs). It contains recommendations on how to avoid typical problems that may be encountered on an NLC install. This article will elaborate on some of those “lessons” and offer recommendations. The discussion in the blog post centred around systems deployed in two of the four quadrants. Here’s a brief summary of the equipment in each.

Lighting Programming
Building a Control Narrative
By Matthew Payette
A lighting programming and control narrative is a document that is essential to coordinate the design/construction process with a fully realized final architectural product. It defines how lighting will integrate into the space and ultimately how humans will interact with that same space. Sometimes there is a gap between the initial visions of the designers and the final product. Other times the final product and operation of the lighting systems is achieved but after much project management distress toward the end of the project. This can be remedied by defining and using a programming and control narrative.
