Electrical Safety
In his regular column on arc flash and shock hazard safety, Terry Becker looks at specification of scope and deliverable requirements for arc flash hazard calculation studies. On a similar note, Littelfuse recently released a whitepaper on safety by design as it relates to arc flash and shock hazards. They factor in expected turn over in the workforce as inexperience increases risk, emphasising the importance of achieving safety by design and relying less on strategies lower down the hierarchy of controls. Also in line with this issue's Safety theme, Swati Vora-Patel discusses GUV devices and how to find information on devices approved for use in Canada. Good reading!

Ark Flash & Shock Hazzard
IEEE 1584.1 IEEE Guide for the Specification of Scope and Deliverable Requirements for an Arc-Flash Hazard Calculation Study in Accordance with IEEE Std 1584
By Terry Becker
IEEE 1584.1 Guide for Specification of Scope and Deliverable Requirements for an Arc-Flash Hazard Calculation Study in Accordance with IEEE Std 1584 provides detailed guidance on how to complete an arc flash hazard incident energy analysis study and recommended content for the P.Eng. authenticated report. This is a complimentary Standard to IEEE 1584. It has been my experience in my work as an independent electrical safety consultant working in industry across Canada that not many P.Eng. Electrical Engineers are aware that the IEEE 1584.1 Guide for Specification of Scope and Deliverable Requirements for an

Hierarchy of Controls
Whitepaper: Achieving Electrical Safety By Design
All workers, regardless of age, need to be reminded that while Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential, it is the last line of defense in an electrical hazard. The ANSI Z10/CSA Z1000 Occupational Health and Safety risk control hierarchy lists PPE as the least effective safeguard for arc-flash risk. By far the best approach is to design safety into the plant’s electrical system from the start. Cost is often an obstacle to implementing engineering controls to mitigate risk, but electrical incidents have a huge impact on a plant’s bottom line both directly and indirectly. OSHA estimates the average electric shock injury costs an employer over $180,000. Furthermore, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) reports that Liberty Mutual polled executives and learned that for every $1.00 spent on workplace safety, they saw a return of $3.00. Safety is a good investment.

Work Outside All Day? Learn About UV and How to Protect your Eyes
By Glyn Jones
Summer is finally here and for those of you who get to work outside all day you’ll need to take care to manage the UV exposure to your eyes. UV is an abbreviation for ultra-violet, and it is part of the sun’s energy that is invisible to the eye but can cause harm. When our eyes are unprotected, UV exposure can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, photokeratitis (snow blindness) and other eye diseases, including cancer. Fortunately, protection is easy, affordable and accessible with the use of UV-protected sunglasses and UV-coated safety eyewear.

Questions from the Canadian Electrical Contractor Discussion Group
- Clients Refusing to Pay
"Has anyone had to deal with a small account for a residential service call? I have $500.00 that the client is claiming they will not pay… seems frivolous to lien them for a small amount. Any other advice to help convince these types of people they should pay?"

- Charge out for Small Business Contractor
“In Alberta what is the usual going rate for a small business electrical contractor to charge out for service calls? I’m not quite sure if I’m charging too much or too little. I dont want to take the client through the ringer but at the same time i dont want to cut myself short either.”
