EIN EV CSA 400As the number of electric vehicles increase, so does the necessity for additional electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), and subsequently, increased electrical infrastructure capacity.

Existing electrical infrastructure was not designed to accommodate EV charging. In urban areas, many people live in multi-unit residential buildings, such as apartments and condominiums with associated parking garages. Residents in these buildings require access to charging, but incoming electrical supplies, transformers, electrical panels, and feeders typically have insufficient spare capacity to accommodate dedicated EVSE for each parking stall.

A potential solution to this limitation is implementing electric vehicle energy management systems to maximize electrical infrastructure utilization to accommodate as many EVSE as possible.

CSA Group's research report on Electric Vehicle Energy Management Systems explores possible configurations for the required infrastructure.
