Canadian Electrical Code; Electric Heating
In this issue code contributor, Bill Burr looks at Section 40 – Electric Cranes and Hoists of the Canadian Electrical Code. While Steve Douglas looks at changes in the 2021 edition of the CEC that may be relevant to electrical equipment manufacturers in his regular series hosted by EFC and QPS. Despite the summer heat we also continue to look at electric heating solutions in our product section, as well as with a quick case study of a Peterborough bed and breakfast. Good reading!

Canadian Electrical Code
Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1 – A Road Map: Section 40
By William (Bill) Burr
The Code is a comprehensive document. Sometimes it can seem quite daunting to quickly find the information you need. This series of articles provides a guide to help users find their way through this critical document. This is not intended to replace the notes in Appendix B or the explanations of individual requirements contained in the CEC Handbook, but will hopefully provide some help in navigating the Code. These notes are based on the 25th edition. 40-000 Scope - This is a supplementary or amendatory section of the code and applies to the installation of electrical equipment and circuits for electric cranes, hoists, and monorails. The CEC Handbook provides additional notes and diagrams to better explain this section.

2021 Changes in the Canadian Electrical Code: Tray Cables
By Steve Douglas, Senior Technical Codes Specialist, QPS
This is the third article of the ongoing series detailing significant changes for the 2021 Canadian Electrical Code Part I (CE Code) that may impact electrical equipment manufacturers. Rule 12-2202 Insulated conductors and cables in cable trays have significant changes. First is a new Subrule 1) that recognizes the revised definition for cable trays as supporting means for cables. The definition of “cable tray” has replaced the word “raceway” with the wording “supporting means”. At the same time “cable tray” was removed from the definition for ‘raceway”. This means that cable tray is no longer considered a raceway in Canada.

Report: Luminaire Level Lighting Controls and the Future of Healthy Buildings
It could be argued that we have planned cities and constructed buildings to support human health for millennia. In our recent industrialized history, it is clear to see how the 1918 influenza pandemic sparked a design movement (Modernism) that was co-mingled with increased access to light and air, and elevated awareness of the value of connection to nature, all in an effort to minimize disease transmission [1]. As is often the case throughout human history, the pendulum swung back, as exemplified by the 1973-74 oil embargo and our collective reactions to reduce energy use and therefore force a disconnection with nature by closing the dampers on building ventilation, and shuttering windows [2].

Innova Heating Infrared Heaters
Unlike other supplemental heating appliances, infrared heaters do not heat the air and instead emit a clean, safe wavelength of light that only warms the objects the wavelength touches. The physics involved is similar to the way sunlight warms objects, which means there is a natural feel to being warmed by the heat from an Innova heater. Infrared heat is therefore evenly distributed, meaning that it does not easily “blow away” in various weather conditions.
