The 2024 Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (twenty-sixth edition) was published on March 4, 2024 and is scheduled to come into force on April 1, 2025 throughout the Province of Alberta.

Summary

Information on the automatic code updates and compliance requirements. Under the Safety Codes Act, the Minister may choose to adopt the code early, delay adoption, or not adopt.

Code in Force under the Regulations

On April 1, 2025, the Electrical Code Regulation is scheduled to adopt:

CSA-C22.1-24 – Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (twenty-sixth edition) – This code provides the minimum safety standards for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment.

Persons who have received a permit by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) to undertake electrical installations regulated under the previous 2021 Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (twenty-fifth edition) prior to April 1, 2025 will be considered in compliance with the Safety Codes Act. Installations permitted on or after April 1, 2025 are required to conform to the new 2024 edition of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. Unless an unsafe condition exists or would exist in the opinion of the AHJ, electrical installations in progress should not be required to be updated to the new codes and result in undue hardship or cost. Questions regarding unusual situations should be directed in writing to your local AHJ. To find your local AHJ, click on the Get a Permit link found at safetycodes.ab.ca.

For area classification requirements at oil and gas facilities permitted or constructed prior to February 1, 2019, the use of the “Code for Electrical Installations at Oil and Gas Facilities” published by the Safety Codes Council is allowed.
