2024 IDEAL National Championship Wraps up in West Palm Beach, Florida

September 30, 2024

IDEAL successfully concluded the 2024 IDEAL National Championship, with the finals taking place in West Palm Beach, Florida this past weekend.

Between April and July, IDEAL organized 10 qualifying events across Canada, engaging over 500 enthusiastic student apprentices eager to demonstrate their troubleshooting abilities. Each event’s top finisher advanced to the at-home semi-finals in August. The semi-finals winner was 1st year apprentice, Tye Shields from the IBEW 105 in Hamilton. His training centre benefits from his placement and will receive a $2,500 tool allotment to outfit their classrooms!

In West Palm Beach, Canada was proudly represented by 3rd year apprentice, Madina Nuur from the IBEW 2085 in Winnipeg, MB.

Madina competed against 9 other top student apprentices from across the U.S, taking on the challenge of installing an electrical sub-panel, wiring an AC/heat pump condenser and installing and wiring an air handler with heat coil. Admitting the task was advanced considering where she is in her apprenticeship training, she was proud of how much she could complete in the 90 minutes given.

“It was a good way to kind of see where I’m at in my apprenticeship and what I’d still like to work on. I learned a lot about a few things in the competition electrical wise, like air handlers and condensers and installing a sub panel,” Madina said, “all sorts of stuff.”

“I feel I could have done better, but I’m pretty happy with how I did. I was super anxious, and I felt like I couldn’t really think straight, and I hadn’t done piping and stuff in a while.”

Although not placing in the top three, she is already looking ahead to next year, determined to qualify again to earn another chance at the title.

“As always we appreciate your support throughout this 2024 season. Your contributions have been essential to our success. We look forward to sharing more information about the 2025 IDEAL National Championships in the coming months,” said IDEAL via press release. “Thank you again, and here’s to another exciting year ahead!”
