Weidmuller Celebrating a Legacy: 175 Years Globally, 50 Years in Canada

April 28, 2025

The year 2025 is truly special for Weidmüller. The company proudly celebrates not just 50 remarkable years in Canada but also its 175th anniversary globally—an extraordinary achievement few companies can claim.

This legacy is a testament to the company’s relentless pursuit of innovation and commitment to refining its offerings. But the journey doesn’t stop here; Weidmuller continues to push boundaries and drive advancements in electrical connectivity.

A Journey into Electrical Connectivity

Founded near Chemnitz, Germany, Weidmüller began its journey as a textile company, specializing in textile production. Over time, the company diversified, venturing into the manufacture of press studs and pioneering its own innovative fastening system—an early form of connection technology that combined tradition with ingenuity.

In the mid-20th century, after re-establishing its roots in Detmold, Weidmüller shifted focus towards electrical connectivity. The invention of the world’s first plastic-insulated terminal block marked a turning point, revolutionizing cabinet building by replacing fragile porcelain models with a more robust solution. This breakthrough laid the foundation for the company’s first export ventures. By the late 1950s, Weidmüller had expanded across Europe, and by the 1970s, it had firmly established its global footprint.

From Specialist to Major Global Provider

Today, Weidmüller stands tall as a global provider in electrical connectivity, operating in over 80 countries. The company’s success is rooted in a series of pioneering innovations, including the integration of electronic components into terminal blocks in the late 1980s. These forward-thinking solutions continue to shape the future of electrification, automation, and digitalization.

As a family-owned enterprise, Weidmüller employs approximately 6,000 people worldwide and offers a portfolio of over 45,000 products, generating an annual turnover of around one billion euros. This incredible journey from a small textile company to a global powerhouse reflects our unwavering dedication to excellence and innovation.

Looking Ahead

As Weidmuller celebrates its 175th global anniversary and 50 years in Canada, the company reflects on its rich history with immense pride. And yet the focus remains firmly on the future. Weidmuller will continue to evolve, refine its offerings, and drive innovations that will shape the next chapter of the company’s journey.
