Solar Project at Saint John Laundry

 A newly completed 500-kilowatt solar energy project at Saint John Laundry will generate about 25 per cent of the facility’s electricity needs.

“This is the largest solar installation to date at a provincial government-owned facility,” said Local Government Minister Aaron Kennedy, who is also minister responsible for Service New Brunswick. “This will reduce energy costs, and, since it’s producing clean energy, it will reduce our carbon footprint, as well.”

The plant processes more than seven million kilograms of laundry each year for health-care facilities and nursing homes across the province.

“This solar project will have a positive impact on our environment,” said Environment and Climate Change Minster Gilles LePage. “The total emission reduction of the project is equivalent to taking 50 cars off the road. This is one more example of how our government is combatting climate change.”

The project received about $1.9 million from the Climate Change Fund, which offers financial support to initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting educational opportunities and enhancing the province’s ability to cope with the effects of climate change. The fund encourages local, climate-focused solutions to advance the Climate Change Action Plan, which guides the province’s efforts to achieve its greenhouse gas reduction target for 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.
