ECABC Tech Talk: Fire Alarm System Installations – May 13, BCIT Burnaby Campus

This two-hour Tech Talk will provide participants with practical guidance on fire alarm system installation in accordance with current codes and standards.

Lead by Frank Kurz, the Fire Technician Network’s Founder and Executive Director, this presentation will cover wiring and installation requirements, sprinkler monitoring devices, addressable control and relay modules, Class A and Class B wiring, key Vancouver Building Bylaw 2025 updates, and more.

The session will be followed by a Q&A session.

Food and refreshments will be provided!

Course Outline:

  • Resources (wiring guidelines, installation guidelines)
  • Installation of supporting field devices that monitor sprinkler flow and valve switches
  • What the Engineer has to provide in his drawings and specifications (and what to do if it’s not there)
  • Installation of addressable control and relay modules (and connection to HVAC, and other controlled circuits)
  • Class A type wiring (and isolator installation)
  • Class B type wiring (and isolator installation)
  • Vancouver Building Bylaw 2025 changes
    • Installation of additional relays for Fire Signal Receiving Centre service
    • Installation requirements for in-suite sounders (BCBC vs. VBBL)
  • What to expect during a Verification
  • What to expect during an Integrated Systems Test
