Apprenticeship Training; Electric Heating
In this issue Keith Sones takes an interesting look at recognizing unconscious bias and the importance of critical thinking in decision making. Electric heating is our product theme for August, Mitsubishi Electric provides some insight into one of their energy efficient heating systems with a case study from Bruce County. ECAO and OEL are conducting a survey of electrical contractors on the ESA Permit process, you’ll find more information on that below. Ontario has increased funding to help small businesses establish an online presence, which could be an opportunity for contractors to improve marketing. Good reading!

Leadership
It’s Called Spin, but it Goes by Other Names As Well
By Keith Sones
Over the past almost six decades, I have been very fortunate in many ways. Opportunity has knocked on my door a number of times, most often finding me accidentally, even when I was looking the other way. As a result of merely opening the door when I heard the rapping sound, I’ve been able to travel to the biggest cities and well off the beaten track, I have a wonderful family (I met my wife when she literally knocked on my door in a snowstorm looking for refuge), I tackle exciting new job opportunities and have even influenced a few things in that “lasting legacy” kind of way, albeit mostly in a minor capacity remembered by a few people. Still, the memories make me smile.

Apprenticeship Training Critical to Ontario’s Future
By Sherri Hague
“My apprenticeship has been a very rich and rewarding experience,” says Christie, a 5th term apprentice with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 353. When it comes to electrical work, he has learned how important proper training and oversight is to ensuring work is done safely and correctly. Not only does the apprentice benefit from developing the necessary skills but for contractors, businesses and taxpayers, it pays off as well.

Case Study: Social Housing Tenants Save 50% on Energy Consumption
Located in Kincardine, Ontario, the Bruce County Housing Co-op is a government-owned social housing complex. It’s made up of sixteen similar townhouses each with two storeys plus a basement, most of which were still using the original, inefficient furnaces that were installed when the complex was built in the 1980s. When the complex received a government grant to improve their infrastructure, they knew upgrading their heating would be a smart investment. Since the tenants pay their own hydro, an energy-efficient system was a must. As most of the units did not have air conditioning, it would be a bonus to have a system with cooling capabilities.

Questions from the Canadian Electrical Contractor Group
- What do you Recommend to Customers on Using Outlet Extenders?
Chris Tymchuk commented that, "Problem is these are Approved devices sold at most stores. A lot of Residential fires are caused by lamp cords thus we have Arc Fault breakers now. Only thing we as Electricians can do is explain the situation to the home owners and maybe make some money installing a Arc Fault if they don't have them. There is not much one can do."

- Can you use a 3-pole Breaker to Feed a 208V Single Phase Load?
Clayton Glover explained that, "You can, but it’s not advisable. I have seen breakers fail when used like this, they will typically blow out a side wall. I can not explain this other than observation. So short term yes, long term no... in my professional experience (23yrs)." While another electrician commented that, " I’m not sure what could have caused your breaker failure, but loading a 3 pole breaker with 2 load phases will not cause it. We do it all the time with small single phase transformers on a 3 pole for the future upgrade and never have one fail, ever."
