I first met Mike Byam at the 2017 Ideal Supply northern trade show in Barrie, Ontario, and have since had the pleasure of bumping into him at a few other industry events. He is an incredibly open and welcoming individual who is always wearing a smile, happy to talk shop, and has a great memory, recalling me by name after only one brief meeting.
Mike is also quite the family man, raising four boys with his wife Sue in Bowmanville, Ontario. Mike says he “enjoys woodworking, fishing, campfires by the lake, and quiet time with his wife when the boys are asleep.”
Mike has an Electrical Engineering Technician diploma from Sir Sanford Fleming College that landed him his first industry position in 1990 at a small distributor in Waterloo. He started in the shipping and receiving department and worked his way up to an inside sales position. From there he worked for several years at various distributors chasing his goal of going on the road as a salesman.
He achieved his goal at Hammond Manufacturing. He has been with Hammond for 11 years and covers Northern/Eastern Ontario, calling on end users and Hammond’s distributor channel, as well as making engineering and consultant calls from time to time.
Hammond has been in the electrical industry for 100 years and has developed an excellent reputation in that time. As a salesman, Mike focuses on industries such as oil/gas, fresh and waste water, mining, food/beverage, OEM panel shops, and contractors. He notes that Hammond has a wide range of enclosure sizes available from 6x6x4 up to large 5-door enclosures ranging from NEMA 1 to NEMA 4x.
I asked Mike what the best thing about his 11 years at Hammond has been. He responded, “I have enjoyed the fact the fact that it is a Canadian-owned company and that they treat us like people and not a number. They have a family first attitude that helps when you have four young boys. Also, I have an excellent group of people to work with.”
Looking to the future Mike says, “I see big things for Hammond as we invest in our new manufacturing processes and grow the Hammond footprint. We just opened a new plant in the Guelph area.”
Mike has a passion for his job and Hammond is lucky to have devoted and knowledgeable staff like him representing them on the road.
