CAF Report: The Green Economy And Its Impact On The Skilled Trades In Canada

The transition to a greener economy promises long-term environmental benefits, anticipated to create both significant opportunities and challenges. One of the key concerns is the labour market implications during the ramp-up of clean technologies. This transition is accelerating the demand for existing and new competencies that, if in short supply, could impede the pace of transition and lead to mismatches in workforce capabilities.
This report assesses the demand for training in apprenticeship programs as the economy advances towards decarbonization. It also examines key green occupations that rely on certified tradespeople but lack formal apprenticeship programs. The objective of this report is to better understand the supply and demand dynamics of skilled trades that are critical to the green economy and to assess the readiness of Canadaโs workforce to support a low-carbon future.
