Case Study: Using Photometric Layouts for Precision Lighting

June 15, 2026

Choosing the right fixture for a site can dramatically impact brightness, coverage, and energy efficiency. This case study highlights a retrofit project where CSC LED helped a customer optimize pump station lighting with photometric layouts.

Project Overview

Our customer wanted to replace existing pole-mounted fixtures to improve visibility, maximize coverage, and maintain energy efficiency, without increasing wattage.

Our team identified two series that would effectively meet the project requirements:

  • FL05 Area Lights for a broad, wide-throw, uniform illumination
  • FLF Flood Lights for focused distribution, projecting light further outward and concentrating output into a targeted area

No Guesswork Required

Our team created photometric layouts for both fixture types, providing a clear visual for project stakeholders and a data-driven view of overall performance. These layouts are provided completely complimentary as part of our project support. This process ensures:

  • Proper placement and uniform coverage
  • Optimized light levels without wasted wattage
  • Reduced glare and light spill outside target areas

By comparing the FL05 and FLF layouts, we identified the solution that would deliver the best performance for this site.

FL05 vs FLF: Lighting Comparison

Case Study: Using Photometric Layouts for Precision Lighting

FL05 Area Lights: Broad, even illumination suitable for general lighting, but less effective at directing light to high-priority areas.

FLF Flood Lights: Projects more light outward, maximizing usable coverage and brightness with the same wattage.

Results

FLF Flood Lights were the ideal choice for this pump station:

  • Expanded coverage: Light reached all critical areas rather than dispersing too widely.
  • Enhanced brightness: The site felt significantly brighter, even at the same energy usage.
  • Maintained efficiency: Better utilization of light output without increasing power consumption.

While FL05 Area Lights remain excellent for uniform, general applications like parking lots or sidewalks, this project highlights how matching the right fixture to the application and validating with a photometric layout ensures superior performance and energy efficiency.

Key Takeaways

  • Area lights excel at broad, general illumination.
  • Flood lights are better for maximizing targeted coverage without additional wattage.
  • Layouts are essential: They help troubleshoot potential issues, plan fixture placement, and confirm performance before installation.

By combining the right fixture with a detailed layout, projects can achieve safer, more efficient, and visually effective lighting.
