Constraining Postures: The Risk that we No Longer Notice

Electricians rarely work in an ideal position. Installing a light fixture on the ceiling, connecting a panel, working under a concrete slab or in a crawl space often forces the body to adopt demanding positions.
According to the CNESST, a posture becomes restrictive when a joint is held near its range of motion limit or when it is kept for too long.
Some common examples on construction sites:
- Work your arms above your shoulders for several minutes.
- crouch or kneel to connect outlets or ducts;
- make connections in tight spaces;
- Twisting the trunk to access equipment.
- Keep the neck extended when working on the ceiling.
These postures are particularly soliciting on the joints:
- shoulders;
- of the back;
- of the knees
- elbows;
- wrists.
Over time, these stresses can cause damage even if the load being handled is small.
Some means of prevention
It is often possible to reduce these constraints by slightly modifying the way of working:
- use a platform rather than a stepladder that is too low;
- adjust the working height when possible;
- alternate tasks to avoid maintaining the same posture for a long time;
- provide recovery breaks during heavy work;
- Choose the tools that allow you to work in a more neutral position.

Good posture isn’t always possible on a jobsite, but every adjustment that reduces stress helps protect joints and prevent long-term injuries.
