Nova Scotia Power Rebuilding Powerline on Long Island

Nova Scotia Power is rebuilding the power line along Over Cove Road on Long Island to maintain service reliability for its customers in the Freeport area. This work is necessary due to the condition and age of the existing power line and poles.

“Each year we assess and prioritize areas of our system that are aging and in need of replacement to prevent future unplanned outages,” said project engineer James Young. “The line along Over Cove Road has reached the end of its expected service life, and with no alternative power source, we need to move ahead with replacing the line, poles and other components to ensure ongoing service reliability.”

Crews began work on the line, including setting new poles, this week. Approximately 70 structures along a 3.5 kilometre stretch of power line will be rebuilt as part of this project. Traffic on Over Cove Road may be reduced to one lane for two to three weeks to ensure the safety of workers and members of the public. Traffic control personnel will be onsite to assist safe travel through the area while work is underway.

Most customers on the road can expect one 45 minute power outage as they are transferred to the new conductor. Customers will receive advance notification of the outage time line to make any necessary preparations.

This project represents a $400,000 investment in service reliability for over 60 Freeport-area customers.
