A 16,200 sq. ft. addition to Northern Cables Inc.’s Susan Street plant in Prescott, Ontario will link it with a Northern Cables building on Wood Street. The company is investing $2 million in the expansion, which will r add 18 new jobs to the company and ensure it retains 163 positions.

Northern Cables manufactures copper, aluminum and low-voltage cables for industrial, mining and commercial use in North America. With $820,000 in support from the Eastern Ontario Development Fund, Northern Cables will add equipment to manufacture aluminum products in the Prescott location. The company will also expand one of their two Brockville locations to increase production. The project has a total value of $8.2 million and is expected to be completed in 2020.

“It’s going to give us more capacity, so obviously it should make us better able to service our customers because we can react faster and take larger orders,” says Northern Cables President Todd Stafford. The company is using local contractors in the expansion, and the main machinery will be made in Canada machinery.

The expansion “will give us a few years of room for capital growth to add machines as we grow, or if opportunities come up [we’ll have] a space to be able to react to that,” Stafford concludes. The company exports up to 50% of its manufacturing capacity.
