New Saint John Energy Partnership Pays Drivers for at-Home EV charging

October 30, 2026

Saint John Energy customers will be able to earn up to 11 cents per kilowatt-hour for charging their electric vehicles at home through a new partnership with Canadian EV charging company SWTCH Energy.

The partnership is SWTCH’s first with an electric utility in Atlantic Canada and combines its Home Charging Program with Saint John Energy’s professional installation service.

Participating customers receive a free SWTCH Level 2 home charger and earn rewards based on the electricity they use to charge their EV. After the first 1,500 kilowatt-hours of charging, customers earn 11 cents for every kilowatt-hour used.

“Affordability has to remain at the centre of the energy transition,” says Glen Fillmore, Saint John Energy’s Vice-President of Strategic Growth and Transformation. “We’re delighted to be the first utility in Atlantic Canada to partner with SWTCH to offer a way for our customers to save money while helping them make cleaner energy choices.”

Saint John Energy will provide a free home assessment to confirm Level 2 charging readiness and the cost to install it, including any panel upgrades. Once the charger arrives, a Saint John Energy electrician will install it and help the customer connect to the SWTCH platform.

Customers pay a $300 deposit when ordering the charger and earn three cents per kilowatt-hour during the first 1,500 kilowatt-hours of charging. Once that threshold is reached – typically within three to five months – customers then get their deposit returned and earn 11 cents per kilowatt-hour.

The reward is made possible through Canada’s Clean Fuels Regulations, which create credits for lower-carbon transportation fuels, including electricity used to charge EVs.

“Saint John Energy is an ideal partner for our first utility collaboration in Atlantic Canada. Customers get a free charger, installation by a local team they already trust, and rewards on every kilowatt-hour, all in one program. It’s been a great partnership to build, and we’re excited to see Saint John drivers start saving every time they plug in,” says Mike Mulqueen, VP Partnerships, SWTCH Energy.

The partnership also expands EV charging options for apartments, condominiums and businesses. Saint John Energy will offer turnkey SWTCH solutions that include site assessment, equipment, installation and local support, while SWTCH’s platform can manage property charging and payments and track business fleet charging and costs.

The initiative supports Saint John Energy’s Zero30 roadmap and The Switch, its suite of programs helping customers make cleaner energy choices at home and on the road while keeping affordability front and centre.
