An environment in transition
The figures are improving on two essential fronts — the health crisis and economic performance. The transitional period we are entering is just as unknown as the pandemic crisis was at the beginning. So, we need to reimagine our work environment, including lighting where controls will play a more important role than ever. See recent changes adopted by the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). Also read our collaborator Bill Burr on the CE Code and high voltage installations. When it comes to developing more inclusive workspaces, implementing a strategy with too narrow of a focus may not go far enough to spur meaningful change. Good reading!

BCEA's Anti-Racism Action Program Survey Results
BCEA wants to help foster a more diverse and inclusive electrical industry. As one step towards this goal, BCEA conducted a survey to better understand the electrical industry as it relates to diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and related topics. The questionnaire gathered information about how familiar industry members are with certain terms and concepts, the extent to which these topics are discussed in the industry, indicators of industry diversity and inclusion, and what people would most like to learn in relation to these topics.

Canada Building Permits Remain at High Levels for April
The total value of building permits remained at historically high levels in April 2021, edging down 0.5% to $11.1 billion, following the record set in March. The slight pullback was mainly due to declines in the residential sector in British Columbia and Quebec, which outweighed national gains in the non-residential sector. On a constant dollar basis (2012=100), building permits were largely unchanged (-0.0%).

Codes & Standards
Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I*
By William (Bill) Burr
Section 36 – High Voltage Installations applies to installations operating above 750 volts, which require special rules and conditions because high voltage arcs can travel through free air and along the surface of some materials. In addition, non-current-carrying metal parts can carry dangerous voltages along their surfaces in a ground-fault situation without effective bonding to ground.

4 Reasons Why DALI Is the Right Lighting Control for Your Customers
The Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) has been around for decades, dating back to the mid-1990s. The world was amid a digital revolution then, and global lighting manufacturers wanted lighting to join the transformation. With the creation of DALI, a common set of international standards for lighting control systems, several European lighting manufacturers working together did just that. Then, after the U.S. joined the effort late in the decade, the industry spearheaded the revolution. Today, DALI has become the industry open standard for tailoring the needs of present-day LED lighting technology, utilizing a two-way communication system that has brought digital capabilities to lighting. DALI allows interconnected drivers, ballasts, switches, sensors and controllers — regardless of differing manufacturers — to “talk” to the user, who then talks back using a DALI controller, a computer equipped with the appropriate software or a building automation system.

Approaching Workplace Diversity from an Intersectional Perspective — What Does it Mean?
In our workplaces we’ve likely heard a lot about how women are underrepresented in the electrical industry, particularly when it comes to trades and technical occupations. We don’t have to look very far to see that this is true (although it is changing slowly, and we have seen some amazing progress and commitments from sector companies). Women as a whole do face particular challenges to entering and progressing through the sector, whether it be through lack of exposure to opportunities, hiring bias, or physical barriers like access to washrooms (yes, this still happens). But if we look more closely, we can see that barriers to entry and progression are a bit more complicated.

IECC 2021 Decoded
By Craig DiLouie
In January 2021, the International Code Council published the 2021 version of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), which has been updated every three years since 2000. This new version reduces lighting power allowances, expands mandatory controls requirements, and issues clarifications. This article starts with some background about commercial building energy codes and then describes the major lighting control requirements in 2021 IECC, highlighting significant changes from the 2018 version. The most significant changes in the control requirements include the addition of daylight-responsive control for secondary daylight zones, plug load control, parking garage lighting control, and corridor lighting control.
