Bruce Power and TransCanada Turbines have entered into an agreement valued at more than $5.9 million in support of major component overhauls for the standby generators.

Over the next five years, Bruce Power will be investing in the asset management work to improve the Avon engines, power turbines, main reduction gearboxes and electrical generators. The standby generators are a backup power supply in the event of a loss of power.

Safety is Bruce Power’s number one value,” says Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power President and CEO. “The improvements to our standby generators are imperative to ensure the continued safe and successful operation of the Bruce Power site. TransCanada Turbines have a long history in the industry and their expertise will ensure we deliver our ongoing projects on time and on budget by completing important work that is a key piece of Bruce Power’s life extension program.”

The operation of the Bruce site through 2064 will create and sustain 22,000 direct and indirect jobs annually, while creating $4 billion in annual Ontario economic benefit through the direct and indirect spending on operational equipment, supplies, materials and labour income.

“Our team is thrilled to be able to continue our long working relationship with the Bruce Power facility,” says Darcy Simonelli, Vice President, TransCanada Turbines. “The award of this new contract is a very significant event for our Canadian operations team who are extremely proud to be involved in the maintenance and support of critical Canadian infrastructure. TransCanada Turbines complete focus on safety and quality align with Bruce Powers key drivers and we look forward to a successful contract execution.”

The eight Bruce Power CANDU units produce 30 percent of Ontario’s electricity at 30 percent less than the average cost to generate residential power.
