Creating Real Apprenticeships for Toronto Offers 14-Week Pre-Apprenticeship Training for Women

The program is available to young women aged 19 to 29 who live in Toronto Community Housing Communities (TCHC) as well as other women in vulnerable situations.

As reported in Daily Commercial News, the program will run from Aug. 27 to Nov. 30 and offers four weeks of paid in-class training, a 10-week job placement, a child care subsidy, travel subsidy, basic hand tools and safety equipment and mentoring through Sisters in the Trades. Twelve spots are available.

The program is organized by the College of Carpenters and Allied Trades and sponsored by a number of partners including The Daniels Corporation, Heights Development, Building Opportunities for Life Today (BOLT), the YMCA of Greater Toronto, TCHC, MAESD and Sisters in the Trades. Construction Connections is providing support for the program.

The first four weeks of training will provide a life and employment skills preparation, academic upgrading, primarily in math, and basic health and safety training. For the remaining 10 weeks, participants will be on a work placement with a subcontractors. The company will try to match pre-apprentices to their interests such as electrical carpentry, drywall, or plumbing.
