Technical Safety BC Provides Guidance on EV Charging Equipment and Energy Management Systems

Technical Safety BC

Nov 25, 2018

Technical Safety BC has issued an information bulletin (IB-EL 2018-01) that provides guidance regarding installation of electric vehicle charging supply equipment and energy management systems (EVEMS) in the province.

While EVEMS are rapidly becoming available for use in BC, the current BC Electrical Code Regulation does not permit the installation of any electrical equipment or systems such as EVEMS if the calculated load or demonstrated load exceeds the rating of the distribution equipment, feeder conductors, or services. The information bulletin outlines the details around requesting a variance so these items can be installed.

Technical Safety BC is now formalizing an online process to submit EVEMS variances, which will be rolled out in early 2019 along with webinars for training purposes.
