ESA Highlights Proactive Maintenance as Part of Building Safety Month

Much of Ontario’s housing stock is aging, and the risks are becoming harder to ignore.

More than 𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲-𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟰𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱. Between 2019 and 2023, there was an 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝟯𝟮 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 in aging multi-unit residential buildings, with the potential to displace tenants for extended periods of time.

These risks rarely stem from a single issue. Aging systems, water damage and deferred maintenance can come together in ways that increase the likelihood of serious incidents.

As ESA marks Building Safety Month and this year’s focus, 𝘉𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵, ESA’s Vice President of Communications, Strategy & Innovation, Karen Ras, is sharing why proactive maintenance across systems is essential to keeping buildings safe and reliable.
