Nexans Canada Celebrates 60 Years of Electrifying Canada from Fergus, Ontario

August 7, 2026

Canada’s largest wire and cable manufacturer marks six decades of continuous manufacturing in Centre Wellington — and is investing to meet market demands

On August 6th, Nexans Canada celebrated the 60th anniversary of its Fergus, Ontario manufacturing facility, marking six decades of continuous wire and cable production in the heart of Centre Wellington. The milestone was celebrated with employees, families, community partners, and dignitaries at the 670 Gzowski Street facility.

On any given day, the Fergus plant — which made the wire that powers iconic landmarks such as the CN Tower — is running at near maximum capacity, with production clocking double-digit growth year-over-year in the first half of 2026. Nexans Canada — the largest and only vertically integrated wire and cable manufacturer in Canada — is investing over $40 million across its Canadian operations, including a new PVC compounder at Fergus expected to come online this year, which produces jacketing material in-house and deepens Nexans Canada’s vertical integration advantage.

“We didn’t survive sixty years by being the most powerful in the room. We survived by adapting — what we made, how we made it, who we made it for,” said Tim King, President and Managing Director North America, Nexans, to guests at the plant’s anniversary celebration. “Our people have been the key to our success – our ability to innovate and meet the moment make us the trusted partner for wiring Canada’s energy future.”

The Fergus plant, which opened on August 6, 1966, has grown from a staff of 15 producing automotive wire to a 270,000 square foot facility running three shifts, employing more than 200 skilled local workers, and manufacturing residential, commercial, industrial, solar, data centre, and distribution cables for customers across North America. The plant is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified.

“Nexans has been an important part of the Centre Wellington community for 60 years. As one of our largest employers, the company has helped generations of local families build their futures while contributing to the strength and vitality of our community,” shared Mayor Shawn Watters, Township of Centre Wellington. “We are proud to celebrate this milestone and grateful for the partnership Nexans has built with Centre Wellington over the past six decades. On behalf of Council and our residents, congratulations on 60 years of success, and we look forward to what the future holds together.”

Products made in Fergus have powered some of Canada’s most iconic infrastructure, such as:
  • Ontario’s first hydroelectric transmission lines
  • The CN Tower
  • Rogers Centre
  • The Confederation Bridge
  • Canadian Navy frigates
  • Data centres and utility projects across North America

“We have been involved in Canada’s electrification story for over a hundred years. We will continue to invest to meet the needs of Canadians. The moment demands scale, investment, and innovation — and Nexans is ready,” said King.

The 60th anniversary arrives at a pivotal moment for Canadian manufacturing. As the federal government commits to doubling Canada’s electricity grid by 2050, demand for wire and cable is surging on two fronts simultaneously: the grid infrastructure that carries power, and the data centres, EV charging networks, industrial facilities, and homes that consume it. The Fergus plant manufactures cable for both sides of that equation.

The plant demonstrates Nexans Canada’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Rather than drawing from the municipal water system, the facility uses water from an adjacent community pond for cooling, saving the municipality approximately 130 million litres of water annually. It also sends remnant casings to be made into consumer items like composite deck boards.

As part of the Fergus community, Nexans Canada supports many local organizations. It is the Grand Sponsor of the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games — one of the largest Highland Games events in North America, running annually since 1946. It begins the weekend following today’s celebration.
