Prompt Payment Regulations Come into Force on 8 September in Quebec

August 25, 2025

Quebec’s prompt payment legislation, the Regulation respecting payments and the rapid settlement of disputes in construction work by the Government of Quebec, is scheduled to come into force on September 8, 2025.

This new regulation establishes a regime for the timely payment of sums of money owed to companies involved in carrying out construction work on behalf of public bodies.

The construction industry formed a coalition more than a decade ago to advocate to the Quebec government for the adoption of legislation to facilitate prompt payment to companies involved in public construction contracts. This is the culmination of a long process of representation to the satisfaction of the parties, thanks to the support of the Treasury Board Secretariat.

This important addition to the regulatory framework for organizations’ contracts helps create a more competitive and equitable business environment for all stakeholders working in the construction sector.
