Real gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.6% in the fourth quarter, following a 0.9% increase in the third quarter. Final domestic demand continued to decelerate (+0.1%), with ongoing weakness in business investment. Investment in housing increased 1.2%. Businesses reduced their inventories by $5.0 billion in the fourth quarter, after accumulating $7.4 billion in the third quarter. Manufacturing inventories were drawn down by $6.9 billion.
This graph shows the average pay by experience for automation and control engineers. Interestingly, pay dips slightly in the 10-20 year experience range, though the graph ultimatley displays a positive trend. The average salary for engineers in this field has the potential to nearly double by mid-career.
Investment in building construction increased 1.5% to $20.4 billion in January, with all components posting gains. The residential sector rose 1.9% to $14.9 billion, while the non-residential sector was up 0.5% to $5.6 billion.
