Delivering Power to the Counter: A Guide to Countertop Receptacles

September 8, 2025

Islands are the heart of the kitchen. It’s a space to set out snacks for a party, a gathering area for family to converse and a comfortable place for work and school. This multi-purpose space gives homeowners a convenient area to live, work and play, and having access to power is integral to its function.

So… What are the options? Here we provide a guide on what to consider when selecting countertop receptacles.

  • Outlet must be installed on or above countertop or work surface
  • Required to have GFCI protection
  • Must pass the UL 498 spill test
WHAT IS IT?

A pop-up countertop outlet is an electrical outlet that can be recessed into a countertop surface and “popped up” for use when needed.

KEY FEATURES
  • To use, the outlet pops up to expose the receptacle slots
  • When not in use, the outlet remains flush or nearly flush with the countertop surface.
  • Provides access to multiple receptacles on the counter
THINGS TO CONSIDER
  • Can be bulky and hard to keep clean
  • Cost of outlet and installation can be high
  • Users with mobility or dexterity concerns may find the pop-up mechanism challenging to use
  • Lift mechanisms or springs can wear overtime and malfunction
  • Can obstruct countertop workspace when in use
  • Requires sufficient under-counter space, which may interfere with cabinetry, drawers or plumbing
WHAT IS IT?

A junction box is an enclosed housing used to protect electrical connections and provide a safe, organized space for splicing wires.

KEY FEATURES
  • Provides a centralized location for connecting and branching electrical wires
  • Simplifies the modification of the wiring system in the future by homeowners
THINGS TO CONSIDER
  • No outlet is installed, leaving the space without power
  • Can be prone to damage and corrosion
  • Leaves the space unfinished, not meeting homeowner expectations
WHAT IS IT?

A countertop outlet is a surface-mount outlet that is recessed into a counter and can be installed with an optional lid.

KEY FEATURES
  • Smaller diameter and less depth compared with pop-up outlets, taking up less space
  • Quick, hassle-free installation
  • Easy to clean and work around whether in use or not
THINGS TO CONSIDER
  • Features one receptacle
  • Must be installed downstream or connected to a GFCI breaker
  • Requires a maximum 2.25-inch hole cut into the counter
