CSA Group’s Standards Research program reached a significant milestone with the publication of its 100th research report, titled Canadian Women’s Experiences with Personal Protective Equipment in the Workplace.

Established in 2016, CSA Group’s Standards Research program supports CSA Group’s not-for-profit Standards Development organization in helping it maintain a robust and impactful portfolio of standards, while also identifying new areas where standards can be of benefit to society. Supporting CSA Group’s ongoing commitment to health, safety and sustainability, the insights and recommendations of the research are often leveraged during the standard development process by CSA Group’s 10,000 volunteer expert members.

Over the past six years, the Standards Research program has supported standards activities, from climate resilience and mental health to intelligent buildings and microgrids. The research has also successfully investigated and uncovered new areas for standards development including connected and automated vehicles, modular construction, and digital health care. Many of CSA Group’s research projects have formed the basis of new standards solutions, with even more helping to identify areas where standards could help benefit society.

“From its humble beginnings, CSA Group’s Standard Research program has flourished, growing significantly in its scope of topics covered and quantity of reports,” says Mary Cianchetti, President, Standards, CSA Group. “This success would not have been possible without the perseverance and dedication of the entire Standards team, as well as the many experts who contributed their knowledge and time to each paper.”

“Looking ahead to the next 100 reports, our team will strive to push the envelope, exploring emerging areas where standards can play a role in making the world safer and more sustainable.”

Beyond developing a robust collection of research, CSA Group’s Standards Research team actively supports future researchers through the organization’s graduate and undergraduate scholarship programs. Looking ahead, the group will also focus on new initiatives to develop standards literacy modules meant to foster greater integration and participation of standards in post-secondary education.

Canadian Women’s Experiences with Personal Protective Equipment in the Workplace offers an enlightening perspective on the current situation and reviews several gaps that need to be addressed. The research, which includes a survey of nearly 3,000 Canadian women, shows that women report being disproportionately impacted by a lack of gender-responsive PPE.
