Subsidies and Financial Aid for Heat Pumps

Several federal and provincial programs in Canada provide financial assistance for installing heat pumps or replacing oil or gas heating systems with electric heat pumps.

Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program:

This federal program offers a grant of up to $10,000 to help homeowners replace their oil heating system with a high-efficiency heat pump. Eligible homeowners can also receive a $250 bonus to cover the costs associated with this transition. What’s more, this program can be combined with certain provincial programs for even greater savings.

Provincial Programs:

Quebec

Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert Program:

This program offers financial assistance of up to $6,700 for the purchase and installation of efficient heat pumps. A 5% bonus is available if at least two energy efficiency measures are installed in the same eligible home.

Chauffez Vert Program:

This program offers a grant for replacing an oil or propane central heating system with one powered by a renewable energy source, such as electricity. The financial assistance is up to $1,275 for a single-family home.

Enbridge’s Clean Home Heating Initiative:

This Ontario government initiative offers homeowners in certain municipalities up to $4,500 for the installation of a hybrid heating system, which combines a heat pump with a natural gas boiler. Initially launched in cities such as Sault Ste. Marie, St. Catharines, Peterborough and London, it has now been extended to Ajax, Barrie, Pickering and Whitby.

Alberta

The Clean Energy Improvement Program is a new way to finance energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades. The project financing is attached to homeowners’ standard property tax bill, so repayments are made to municipalities.
