Ontario Gov’t Passes Infrastructure Plan

Infrastructure

The Infrastructure for Jobs and Prosperity Act was recently passed by the Ontario Government with the goal being to advance long-term infrastructure planning in the province.

The legislation will require the current and future governments to table a long-term infrastructure plan in the legislature within three years. Subsequent plans will be tabled at least once every five years.

The act is intended to promote community benefits, such as local job creation and training opportunities, through infrastructure construction. It will also help better involve apprentices in provincial infrastructure projects through apprenticeship plans.

“I am happy this new legislation will increase apprenticeship opportunities as defined by the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, 2009. Apprenticeships are an essential part of building a highly skilled workforce, combining mentorship from seasoned journeypersons, hands-on practical experience with on the job training and classroom studies. These opportunities will create full-time careers, not just temporary jobs, for the many young men and women who are looking to enter the skilled trades in Ontario each year.”

James St. John
Business Manager, Central Ontario Building Trades Director, Hammer Heads

“I am a big believer in consultation, so I am pleased that Ontario consulted closely with stakeholders to develop this legislation and will continue to consult with us on long-term infrastructure plans. These plans will create greater predictability for the contractors who are building the province up, which will translate into better value and higher quality projects.”
Clive Thurston
President, Ontario General Contractors’ Association
