Saskatchewan Launches Its First 10MW Utility-Scale Solar Project

Sask

The province expects the 10 MW utility-scale solar project, east of Swift Current, to be in service as early as 2019.

Saskatchewan has committed to add 60 MW of solar power by 2021 — roughly enough clean electricity to power between 10,000 and 12,000 homes. Plans to bring solar to Saskatchewan include opportunities for independent power producers, partnerships with First Nations Power Authority and community driven projects.

Adding solar will help the province meet its goal of having 50% of its generation capacity come from renewable sources by 2030, and reduce emissions by about 40% at the same time.
The 10 MW contract was awarded to Saturn Power. This project could also generate construction and material supply opportunities for local vendors. The chosen developer will manage and operate the facility through an agreement with SaskPower.

SaskPower is now preparing for the next 10 MW solar competition, and anticipates issuing the competition documents in early 2019.
