Efficiency Manitoba Officially Opens for Business
Apr 28, 2019
A new crown corporation, Efficiency Manitoba focuses energy efficiency and conservation and replaces Manitoba Hydro’s Power Smart brand, which had been in place for 30 years. The organization is helmed by CEO Colleen Kuruluk, previously the manager of Power Smart Programs at Manitoba Hydro.
Efficiency Manitoba aims to provide a one-stop shop for consumers, businesses, institutions and industry looking for information and tips regarding resource efficiency ranging from smaller-scale home heating to industrial energy conservation projects.
Created by The Efficiency Manitoba Act, Efficiency Manitoba has as its mandate
• achieving electrical energy net savings at least equal to 1.5% of the consumption of electrical energy in the preceding year, for a cumulative total of 22% reduction in the first 15-year period
• achieving natural gas net savings at least equal to 0.75% of the consumption of natural gas in the preceding year, for a cumulative total of 11.25% reduction in the first 15-year period.
• achieving additional reductions in the consumption of electrical energy or natural gas — including resulting reductions in the demand for electrical power — if the reductions can be achieved in a cost-effective manner
• implementing and supporting demand-side management initiatives to meet the savings targets and achieve any resulting reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in Manitoba
• mitigating the impact of rate increases and delaying the point at which capital investments in major new generation and transmission projects will be required by Manitoba Hydro to serve the needs of Manitobans
• having the option to expand efficiency initiatives to include potable water consumed in Manitoba and fossil fuels used in the transportation sector
