Almost 250 people attended Philips’ “Beyond Illumination” event in Montreal on December 1. “Our intention was to gather the influencers, people who influence lighting in Montreal, and we are extremely happy with the tremendous turnout,” said Mike Gentile, President of Philips Canada.

Indeed, Philips presented its new lighting solutions. As mentioned by Vincent Dumais, Director of Sales at Philips specification, “Digital, intelligent, and connected lighting is now a must.” New technologies unveiled at this event fit into this vision of the future.

From an academic perspective, Philips introduced intelligent and adaptable lighting that can create a mood conducive to learning. During courses, for example, increasing brightness increases concentration. Conversely, during recreation lower intensity calms students.

A new dimension in lighting was also presented in the commercial field. Using a smartphone app, light fixtures on the ceiling of our favourite store will be able to recognize us when we enter. Personalized possibilities include guiding us to a specific product, offering a discount of the day, and so on.

Lighting may also play a role in hospitals, to improve patient well-being and thus reduce stress and duration of hospitalization. Light fixtures can, for example, be programmed to mimic sunrise and sunset.

Residential and professional fields were not put aside. Using smartphones and a wireless network, our presence can now be detected by the lighting of our home or our office. At night, the lights willcome on to greet us and trace a lighted path to our workstation.

Increasingly, research shows that lighting influence our moods and consequently our behaviours. Philips relies on this research to develop new products. “Technology is accessible. What remains to be done, it is to let your imagination go,” said Vincent Dumais. But for 2016, Mike Gentile told us that “we will continue the revolutionizing the industry with LED technology. Connected lighting solutions will continue to grow, and no doubt it is now the era of digital light.”
