Alberta Solar Energy Project Expected to be Canada’s Largest

The Alberta Utilities Commission has approved the contruction of its Travers Solar project, which is expected to be Canada’s largest solar farm. The $500 million investment located in Vulcan County, Alberta will have a generating capacity of 400 MW.
The project was awarded to Greengate Power, a company based out of Calgary. Greengate that has developed approximately 600 MW wind energy projects in Alberta and Ontario.
The Travers Solar project will consist of 1.5 million solar panels, providing electricity for more than 100,000 homes. The project, scheduled to begin constructiion in 2020, will be one of the world’s largest solar projects.
“There will be several hundred jobs created during the construction of the project, which will take place over two years, about a dozen or so permanent jobs to operate the project,” Greengate President and CEO, Dan Balaban told the CBC.
