The Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021 is the Ontario government’s new measures to help tradespeople receive certification through Skilled Trades Ontario.

“Minister McNaughton deserves praise for a thoughtful piece of legislation that reflects his approach to engaging the industry in finding effective solutions for challenges experienced over the last few years,” said Stephen Sell, OEL president. “Bill 288 truly demonstrates that the Minister and his staff listened to and acted upon the concerns of stakeholders, and the legislation passing will go some distance in creating positive change to our industry. For this, we are thankful.”

Announced in early May 2021 by the Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development, Monte McNaughton, the recently-passed legislation intends to streamline and simplify the apprenticeship system through the establishment of a new Crown agency, with the Ministry overseeing regulatory decisions and financial supports, among other responsibilities.
