Virtual Tech Talk: Asbestos Awareness, Safe Work Practices – June 23

Exposure to asbestos can cause serious long-term health issues and is recognized as a major cause of workers’ illness and disability. People who work in proximity to asbestos-containing materials may face a risk of exposure when their activities disturb materials such as drywall, flooring, ceilings, block walls containing vermiculite, or insulation materials. This session will provide information on how to understand and address some of the health and safety issues related to asbestos exposure. Topics covered:

  1. What is asbestos?
  2. Asbestos health risks?
  3. Regulations and exposure limits related to asbestos
  4. Asbestos safe work practices

Who should attend:

  • workers and field supervisors in workplaces where asbestos containing materials may be encountered or disturbed during the course of daily work activities.

Speaker:

  • Dr. Melanie Gorman Ng is the Health and Exposure Scientist at the BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) and an Adjunct Professor at the UBC School of Population and Public Health. She is an occupational hygiene researcher with a focus on health hazards in the construction industry. She developed the silica exposure database and model the drives the Silica Control Tool.
