A November 2017 report by U.S. investment firm Lazard shows that wind energy costs continue to track lower across the globe. Since 2009, the unsubsidized levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for onshore utility-scale wind energy has decreased by 67 per cent. This is an ongoing trend. Just since last year’s report, levelized costs have declined by about 6 per cent.
Three of the four wind farm projects announced by the provincial government this month will rise in the south, near Pincher Creek or Bow Island. The fourth will be built northeast of Hanna, potentially benefitting a community impacted by long-term plans to phase out coal-fired power generation.
The Alberta provincial government asked for bids to build 400 MW of wind power. 29 companies responded. When the dust cleared, the bids were so low, the government decided to increase its RfP by 50% to 600 MW. Premier Rachel Notley said the average of 3.7 cents per kilowatt-hour bid by the 3 winning companies is the lowest price for electricity from wind power ever recorded in Canada.

The Mica hydroelectric plant is one of the largest earth-fill dams in the world, operating since the mid-1970s with a generating capacity of 2,805 megawatts (MW). Chaired by Sundeep Chauhan (Motion Picture Association), the AGM provided members with an opportunity to learn about recent developments in IP crime prevention and CACN’s role in advocacy. Sundeep announced the appointment of Katalin Molnar, CSA Group, as Vice-Chair of CACN. Key representatives from Eaton, Siemens and Schneider, participated at this event.
