Virtual Tech Talk: Arc Flash and PPE – Nov 30

Workplace Business Practices Human Rights

November 11, 2022

Join ECABC on Wednesday, November 30th for an informative session on Arc Flash and personal protective equipment (PPE) for the electrical industry!

This webinar will cover the following topics:

  • Arc Flash defined
  • The history of Arc Flash
  • What the Arc Flash risks are in a low voltage environment
  • Who is exposed to Arc Flash events
  • Detailed Arc Flash effects based on distance, time exposed, fault current magnitude, and FR clothing worn

Effects discussed based on a 347/600 Volt example:

  • The surface of the sun is approx. 9000 degrees F, and the origin of the arc flash can reach 35000 degrees F
  • Arc Flash heat energy is calculated in units of Calories per cm square
  • 1.2 Cal/cm^2 is the equivalent of holding a lighter’s flame under the tip of your index finger long enough to start a second-degree burn
  • A second-degree burn is a curable burn that only affects the out layer of skin and causes blisters to form
  • Arc-rated clothing has a Cal/cm^2 rating that will mitigate the rated heat energy to less than 1.2 Cal/cm^2 underneath the clothing

The webinar will conclude with a short question and answer session.
