Canadian municipalities issued $8.4 billion in building permits in January, up 5.6% following a 2.5% rise in December.
The Ontario government is working for workers by launching career fairs this fall to prepare the next generation of young people for rewarding and well-paying jobs in the skilled trades. These fairs address labour shortages in high-demand sectors and help deliver the province’s ambitious infrastructure plans, including building 1.5 million homes by 2031.
New housing construction investment rose 7.9% from November 2016 to $5.0 billion in November, mostly attributable to increased construction investment in apartment buildings (+$282.1 million).
In May 2016, an electrical worker fell from a ladder and suffered permanent injuries while performing electrical wiring work.
Real gross domestic product (GDP) edged down 0.1% in August, after being essentially unchanged in July.
