Canada-U.S. Tariff Update for Electrical Products & Projects from E.B. Horsman

September 11, 2026

By E.B. Horsman & Son

As the trade relationship between Canada and the United States continues to evolve, new Canadian counter-tariffs on certain U.S.-origin products took effect on September 8, 2026. These measures may affect pricing and availability across several product categories commonly used within the electrical industry.

At E.B. Horsman, our commitment remains unchanged: helping customers navigate market changes, maintain project schedules, and make informed purchasing decisions.

What has changed?

The Government of Canada has implemented counter-tariffs on selected U.S.-origin goods. The applicable surtax rates vary by product category and may range from 15% to 50%, depending on the product classification and origin. These tariffs apply specifically to products manufactured in the United States, regardless of where they are purchased.

For the electrical industry, categories identified as potentially affected include:
  • Insulated wire and cable
  • Selected steel and aluminum products
  • Electrical distribution and control equipment
  • Lighting products
  • Conduit and fittings
  • Telecommunications infrastructure products
  • Certain industrial and material handling products

Recent updates to the government’s tariff list also added certain copper wire products to the counter-tariff program.

What Products May Be Impacted?

The impact of these tariffs depends largely on two factors:
  1. Country of origin
  2. Product tariff classification

Many products sold within the Canadian electrical market are sourced from Canada or from countries outside the United States and may not be affected. In addition, certain products may qualify for exemptions under existing trade agreements.

What E.B. Horsman Is Doing

Our team continues to work closely with manufacturers, suppliers, and industry partners to monitor developments and help minimize disruption wherever possible.

We are actively:
  • Reviewing supplier updates and pricing changes
  • Identifying alternative sourcing opportunities when available
  • Assisting customers in evaluating product options
  • Sharing updated information as new details become available

Several manufacturers have also implemented measures intended to maintain supply continuity and provide advance notice of pricing adjustments where applicable.

What Customers Should Consider

To help manage potential impacts, customers may wish to:
  • Review upcoming projects for products potentially affected by tariffs
  • Confirm product origin where pricing certainty is important
  • Discuss material requirements early with their E.B. Horsman representative
  • Evaluate alternative products or sourcing options when appropriate
  • Factor potential pricing fluctuations into future project planning

These recommendations align with guidance being shared across the electrical industry by manufacturers and industry associations. We are also enhancing our online product information by adding Country of Origin details to product pages, available within the Spec Product Information section whenever provided by the manufacturer.
