Alectra Utilities: First Canadian Electricity Distributor to Receive ISO 50001 Certification

March 17, 2017

Alectra Utilities is the first electricity distribution company in Canada to earn the ISO 50001 Energy Management System Certification from the International Organization for Standardization.

Alectra’s family of energy companies distributes electricity to nearly one million customers in Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe Area. This formal recognition recognizes Alectra Utilities’ continuous improvements in energy efficiency at four facilities in Hamilton, St. Catharines and Stoney Creek, Ontario.

The ISO 50001 certification process began two years ago, with the implementation of a more integrated and systematic approach to continuously improving and maintaining an energy management system. The resulting outcome included replacing aging HVAC systems, switching to more energy-efficient lighting, upgrading windows at all facilities, and installing new roofing.

The Alectra Utilities team leading the certification process also created an energy management policy, wrote in-depth procedures, and audited projects, practices, systems and equipment. Future projects and initiatives are planned to improve energy conservation and performance.
