Toronto Hydro Earns Top Spot on Corporate Knights' Annual Listing of Responsible Corporate Leaders

 June 15, 2017

Toronto Hydro was recognized this month as the top-ranked company on Corporate Knights’ fourth annual Future 40 Responsible Corporate Leaders in Canada list.

This marks the third time Toronto has been named to the list since Corporate Knights began publishing the ranking in 2014. Also on the list: Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp (4th) and Horizon Holdings (5th). Shown in photo: Toronto Hydro President and CEO Anthony Haines (left) receiving an award from Corporate Knights CEO and co-founder Toby Heaps (right) at an event in Toronto.

The 2017 Future 40 recognized Toronto Hydro sustainability achievements. Among them:

  • the rollout of a climate change adaptation road map in 2015
  • a reduction in its carbon footprint in recent years, including a 24% decrease between 2014 and 2015
  • recent efforts to replace aging infrastructure; installing solar PV projects on municipally-owned buildings
  • innovative energy storage projects such as Hydrostor, the world’s first underwater energy storage system

Toronto Hydro is one of three electricity companies in Canada to be recognized as a Sustainable Electricity Company by the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA). To determine the rankings, Corporate Knights evaluated firms against industry peers across 14 key performance indicators, including carbon productivity, CEO to average worker pay ratio, per cent of taxes paid and safety records.
