Nova Scotia Tidal Technology Research Projects Receive $1 Million
Natural Resources Canada is investing $1-million in a tidal energy project led by the Offshore Energy Research Association (OERA).
The project, which aims to address knowledge gaps and challenges associated with tidal energy in Canada, received the funding from the federal department’s Energy Innovation Program. The Province of Nova Scotia and OERA have each contributed $125,000 to the project. Shown in photo: Fundy Tidal Interpretive Centre.
OERA is an independent, not-for-profit organization that funds and facilitates collaborative offshore energy and environmental research and development including the examination of renewable energy resources and their interaction with the marine environment.
The Bay of Fundy produces the world’s highest tides, ranging over 16 vertical metres, and strong tidal currents, reaching 10 knots (5.14 metres/sec) at peak surface speed.
Accelerating clean technology development is a key component of the Government’s approach to promoting sustainable economic growth and to supporting Canada’s transition toward a low-carbon economy.
The federal government’s investment is part of a government initiative to support the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, and represents a commitment to creating a cleaner environment for future generations by investing in clean technologies.
