The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) announced that SaskPower achieved the Sustainable Electricity Company Designation. SaskPower is the principle energy supplier for Saskatchewan and has focused on bringing innovative technology to life and supporting their customers since 1929.

Looking ahead, SaskPower is transitioning to a lower-carbon generation portfolio. Towards 2030, the company is focused on collaboration with its stakeholders and partners and affordable electricity for its customers. Their environmental management and social responsibility program enhancements have earned them this prestigious designation.

Mike Marsh, President and CEO of SaskPower noted that, “Receiving this designation and recognition is an honour. It signals that at SaskPower, environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social responsibility are woven into our employees’ work and behaviours. It tells our customers and stakeholders that we are committed to working together to create a future of which we can be proud.”

The Sustainable Electricity Company designation was established by CEA for Canadian utilities from coast-to-coast-to-coast to further advance the integration of sustainability considerations in company decision-making processes. The designation requires utilities to conform to the internationally-recognized ISO 14001 standard on Environmental Management Systems and ISO 26000 Guidance on Social Responsibility. Together, they provide a platform for identifying and addressing key strategic sustainability risks and opportunities related to environmental, social and economic issues. In addition, companies must pass an independent external verification.
