Signify LED’s to Enhance Road Safety and Driving Experience in Stockholm’s E4 Bypass Tunnel

Signify will enhance road safety and improve the driving experience in Stockholm’s E4 Bypass tunnel, connecting the northern and southern parts of Stockholm County. Of the road’s 21 kilometers, more than 18 kilometers will be in a tunnel, making it one of the longest road tunnels in Europe, and one of Sweden’s largest and most prestigious infrastructure projects to date.

While it’s true that there’s always light at the end of the tunnel, the quality of the lighting on the road at each end of the tunnel, and the lighting within the tunnel, is hugely important. The perfect combination of uniform lighting with limited glare and seamless transition on entering and exiting the tunnel are essential for the comfort, visibility, safety, and overall experience for drivers.

“The reason we chose Signify as the supplier for this project is because they had the best and most affordable solution, that meets all requirements for this project. Another important reason is the relationships we have built over several years both locally and centrally with Signify,” said Anders Ingels from installation company Bravida. “We have delivered a number of successful projects together previously, including the Northern and Southern links in Stockholm. In addition to an easy-to-install, efficient and high-quality luminaires, the control system is a proven, reliable solution for tunnels.”

Signify will supply high-quality energy-efficient LED luminaires across this project. Specially designed Philips TubePoint Gen 2 tunnel luminaires will be installed throughout the 18 kilometers of tunnel, while Philips Luma Gen 2 streetlights will be installed along the 3 kilometers of road outside of the tunnel. Modular and modern in design, TubePoint is a versatile, cost-effective luminaire that meets the most stringent tunnel lighting requirements. Made from the highest-quality components – and with its wide choice of optics – installing TubePoint luminaires significantly reduces the number of luminaires required in comparison with a conventional solution installation. Being LED, the long lifetime reduces maintenance requirements and its high lumen per watt ratio at system level reduces operational costs, and improves the overall total cost of ownership at the same time.

The tunnel lighting will be managed, monitored and controlled by Philips TotalTunnel, an integrated tunnel lighting system that further optimizes operations and reduces costs. State-of-the-art LED lighting combined with advanced lighting control and monitoring, ensure optimal lighting conditions for safety and comfort, while remote monitoring of the lighting status allows for planned maintenance and minimizes disruption to operations.

“We are very proud to have won this contract with Bravida to deliver the lighting for Bypass Stockholm. We look forward to adding this tunnel to the list of big tunnel projects we have delivered in Sweden and around the world. Having the right lighting in a tunnel is crucial for the safety and the experience you get when driving many kilometers underground,” said Hans Gyllner, Sales Manager at Signify Sweden.

The tunnel is due to fully open in 2030.
