Project Spotlight: Sainte-Thérèse High School Lighting Upgrade

Built in 1980, the building that houses Sainte-Thérèse high school, in Quebec Canada, was looking a little worse for the wear. Renovation work began with two major projects: introducing a multidisciplinary sports centre, as well as redesigning the parking lots.

The employee and visitor parking lots were completely reconfigured during phase 1 of the renovation work, enabling safe navigation for everyone – from cyclists to pedestrians and drivers – by installing separate lanes for each user.

Safety was priority number one throughout the entire project, including when it came to the choice of lighting for large outdoor areas, which required powerful illumination to ensure maximum visibility.

“Our priority was to create a space where users could circulate safely all year long,” says Youri Leblanc-Thouin, material resources services manager for the Centre de services scolaire des Mille-Îles. “Whether it’s all the kids at day camp in summer, or people exiting the building when it’s dark in wintertime. Not to mention better lighting means less likelihood of vandalism.”

Project designers selected Trika luminaires, which come with sleek, modern lines and fit seamlessly into the newly refurbished environment. Renowned for its flexibility, Trika is available in a variety of mounting types, including post-top, medium or maxi-sized lateral mount, wall mount, or bollard. For this project a combination of the Trika Midi and Trika Maxi side mount luminaires were chosen.

Its high-performance light engine means Trika can offer from 3,500 up to 32,500 delivered lumens, to effectively illuminate a variety of outdoor applications including streets, buildings, parks, or pathways. Trika Midi, with 11,750 delivered lumens, was used for the majority of the school site. A few Trika Maxi luminaires was installed in the parking lot, delivering 32,280 lumens for maximum visibility and security.

Also known for its durability, Trika’s high-performance IP66 rated optical systems provide optimal, reliable lighting in even the most challenging environmental conditions. Trika was therefore an appropriate choice for this project so that it will stand up to the cold and wet Quebec winters.

The project was a success, despite delays caused by the pandemic, phase 1 of the renovation work was completed on time. The school now boasts a living space that’s safe, stimulating, and favorable for learning and success. Talk about smart choices!
