The Manitoba government is proud to acknowledge the outstanding work and commitment of newly certified journeypersons, as well as recognize employers and their contributions to Manitoba’s skilled trades, Business, Mining, Trade and Job Creation Minister Jamie Moses announced last night at the Legislative Building during the 33rd annual Apprenticeship Highest Achievement Awards ceremony.

“Congratulations to all of the award recipients. The dedication and excellence you have demonstrated to your respective trades represents the best of Manitobans,” said Moses. “We’re building our province and creating more good jobs and opportunities for Manitobans to pursue careers in the trades.”

The highest achievement awards celebrated individual accomplishments from 36 recently certified journeypersons who were the highest-achieving graduates in their respective trades and presented two additional awards to individuals achieving the highest score through the trades qualification stream. The event showcased the strength and overall success of the apprenticeship and certification system, noted the minister.

The Manitoba government recognizes the vital role of journeypersons in strengthening communities through their skilled work, while also giving back by mentoring the next generation of skilled tradespeople, noted the minister. Building a skilled and diverse workforce through quality skills training is a key priority, added Moses.

The Manitoba government has committed $400,000 to apprenticeship training equipment grants to ensure technical training providers and apprentices have access to modern equipment, the minister noted, adding it also provides direct support to apprentices during technical training including approximately 90 per cent of their tuition fees and eligible expenses related to travel, accommodations and child care.

“Manitobans can take pride in the quality of new journeypersons who play a critical role in driving progress, providing services we count on and supporting economic growth,” said Tanya Palson, chair, Apprenticeship and Certification Board. “The Apprenticeship and Certification Board looks forward to continuing to strengthen our system so that Manitoba maintains our high standard of excellence in the skilled trades.”

Apprenticeship Manitoba co-ordinates the training and certification of skilled trades workers in Manitoba. Apprenticeship Manitoba offers training and certification in over 50 trade programs.
